Wrexham is a county borough centred around Wrexham but also including the towns of Ruabon, Llangollen, Gwersyllt, Rhosllanerchrugog and Rossett.

Wrexham is one of the six local authorities in GwE, the fully bilingual School Effectiveness and Improvement Service for North Wales.

The school population numbers nearly 19,000 and the authority is responsible for 68 schools.

There are 57 primary schools with an average of 213 students, ranging from Borderbrook School with c. 28 pupils to Borras Park Primary with just under 450 pupils.

There are nine secondary schools with an average size of 683 pupils. Three of the schools have sixth forms. 

There are no through schools in Wrexham. 

There is one special school which has post-16 provision. 

Eight of the 57 primary schools are Welsh medium and one is dual stream. None of the secondary schools are Welsh medium.
