Level the Playing Field started off as a parent-led campaign for more funding for Crickhowell High School in Powys, mid-Wales.

As we became more involved and engaged with the subject of school funding in Wales, we realised that much of the information available is confusing, and the data unclear and hard to interpret. Since we launched in late 2018 we have therefore worked hard to understand, interpret and inform others. The illustration below is an early example of our work showing where Crickhowell’s per pupil funding ranked in the year 2018-19 compared with all other secondary schools in Wales.

We discovered that while information at Welsh Government level or at school level is easy to obtain, there is a gap at local authority level. Local authorities decide how much money their schools get and yet it proves hard to compare their performance or understand the decisions they make and the impact those decisions have on school funding.

This website is our attempt to fill that gap by providing explanation and analysis of school funding in Wales to inform and educate.
